Different Mallets Create Different Tones

THE MALLETS YOU CHOOSE DRAMATICALLY IMPACT THE RANGE OF SOUND YOUR HIMALAYAN SINGING BOWLS CAN PRODUCE

Many Himalayan singing bowl players collect a wide range of mallets to explore the full sonic potential of their singing bowl.

Read how the DENSITY, SIZE & TYPE can help you create a vast array of sounds on a single Himalayan singing bowl.

DENSITY OF HIMALAYAN BOWL MALLETS

HARD MALLETS

  • Hard singing bowl mallets bring the focus to the higher tones of your bowl
  • Striking a metal bowl with the wooden end of a mallet is not ideal as it can create a sharp tone that may startle the nervous system.
  • Striking a metal bowl with the suede end of a mallet is less startling and when used gently, can create a nice tone.
  • If you want to take your sound to the next level, consider a professionally made mallet that has a hard core and is covered with thin soft fabric. This type of Himalayan singing bowl mallet allows the bright high tones to sing, yet has warmth and relaxation to the tone.

SOFT MALLETS

  • Soft singing bowl mallets mute the impact of the attack, producing a warmer, gentle tone.

SIZE OF HIMALAYAN BOWL MALLETS

LARGE VS SMALL MALLETS

  • Large singing bowl mallets cover a larger surface area when they touch the bowl. This mutes many of the higher tones that vibrate quickly, allowing us to focus on the lower tones of the bowl.
  • Small singing bowl mallets focus on the higher tones of the singing bowl.

TYPE OF HIMALAYAN BOWL MALLETS

TAPPING MALLETS

  • Each bowl comes with a soft tapping mallet.
  • This is our preferred way to play a Himalayan singing bowl because tapping allows a multitude of tones to sing, creating the rich vibrant sound that we love.
  • Tapping mallets come in a variety of sizes and densities. Each mallet highlights the many different and unique sounds contained within each bowl.

RIMMING MALLETS

  • Each bowl comes with a rimming mallet that has suede on one half.
  • Rimming with the wood side creates a harsh tone.
  • Rimming with the suede side creates a warmer tone.
  • Professionally made rimming mallets create a smoother sound and is often easier to play with.
  • Rimming a bowl brings focus to one pure tone or frequency.
  • Sometimes the rimming tone is described as a female or male. Please note: this does not refer to a masculine or feminine energy, it is about vocal ranges.
    • The female tone is a sound that sings higher, closer to the vocal range of most women.
    • The male tone is a sound that sings lower, closer to the vocal range of most men.
  • Some bowls sold at boutique shops and pharmacies will not sing when played on the rim. These are commonly called or referred to as cottage bowls. However, they may still make a beautiful sound when tapped.

Care for your Himalayan Singing Bowl

CARING FOR YOUR HIMALAYAN SINGING BOWL IS EASY

  • Clean with dish soap and water. Dry well.
  • Wipe all moisture off the bowl when in a damp location.
  • To remove stickers, spray a bit of window spray foam cleaner on the sticker and let it sit for a minute or two. Wipe clean. If glue residue is still there, soak with olive oil and rub with a soft plastic scraper. Do not use scrubbing pads as this will scratch the surface of your bowl.
  • Green tarnish occurs when moisture is allowed to sit on the bowl. To remove tarnish, try a bit of lemon and elbow grease. Sometimes a stain will remain that cannot be removed. This adds to the patina of your bowl.
  • Using metal cleaner is not recommended but can be used on green spots sparingly.
